Now you have access to an RT60 measurement tool for iPhone by Studio Six Digital. RT60 is part of a collection of acoustic analysis and testing applications. It measures reverb decay time for each octave band ranging from 63Hz to 4kHz. It achieves this by pulsing pink noise on and off, filtering the incoming signal by octave band, and measuring the decay timing of each band.
RT60 complies with the international acoustics standard ISO 3382, used for measuring room decay time (RT) through the T20 or T30 method.
The tool can measure decay times from 50ms up to 4 seconds. Results are shown for each band above it, with the overall RT60 calculated and displayed at the top of the screen. RT60 requires a minimum of 25dB of headroom between the noise floor and the pink noise level for T20 analysis, suggesting increasing the amplifier level if necessary.
- To use RT60, connect the iPhone output to an amp and speaker input. Gradually increase the level after tapping the Generator icon. RT60 smoothens results from multiple readings for accuracy.
- Screen Graphics: The red bars represent current SPL levels per octave band. Thin black bars display the most recently measured max and min dB levels within that band for RT60 calculation. Vertical yellow bars indicate available decay range, though in some cases, ambient noise levels in the room may hinder accurate readings across all bands.
- Calculations: An RT60 time is displayed above the yellow bar if it can be computed; otherwise, no value is shown.
- Upon completion, save the graph image to your photo roll for reporting purposes.
- Calibration & Microphone: Like all Studio Six Digital apps, RT60 offers calibration options. While a typical iPhone value is preset, adjustments can be made with a calibrated SPL meter if available. Users can choose between Internal or External microphone options, where Internal applies a compensation network to adjust for built-in or headset mic response, while External requires no compensation.
